Mammals of Africa
Savanna
The animals of the African savanna are some of the most recognizable in the world. These include the African elephant, lion, cheetah, zebra, hippopotamus, gazelle, and giraffe. The savanna is a very dry area, but not as bad as the deserts. Animals here tend to have to share one watering hole.
Desert
Africa has some of the largest deserts in the world. Mammals like the camel are able to survive here because they have a water storage system in the humps on their backs. Fennec foxes live in holes in the ground because it is cooler underground than it is above. Other desert dwelling mammals have specific body functions that help them keep cool.
Jungle
There are actually parts of Africa that are not scorched and barren like the deserts and savanna. Mammals such as the okapi, gorilla, and the pygmy hippopotamus are relatives of the savanna dwellers, but do not have the same adaptations because of their different environments.
